In the late 1970s in Hong Kong an elderly Chinese man in modest circumstances was convicted in - I think the South Kowloon Magistrates Court-of the offence of possession of an opium pipe and a small quantity of opium. This was at that time a fairly rare offence in Hong Kong. His defence was given in English and was simply that his first opium pipe had been issued to him in the Great War while serving "in France" (presumably in the Chinese Labour Corps) by the British Army, the implication being that that was the start of his addiction. He received a small fine and confiscation of exhibits.

I have wondered from time to time if there was any truth to his claim?

Please help….
